Discover Thoddoo
An inhabited farming island in Alif Alif Atoll, about an hour and a half from Malé by speedboat. Roughly a third of it is under cultivation. Just under two thousand people live here, and the ceremony happens on its west-facing beach. This page is what we would tell you if you rang and asked what the place is actually like.

A farming island that also takes visitors
About a third of Thoddoo’s area is farmland, and it is the largest producer of watermelon and betel leaf in the Maldives. That is the island’s first trade. Tourism is the newer one: guesthouses opened from 2015, and there are now more than 200 guest rooms across 70 registered tourist facilities — 69 guesthouses and one homestay.
This is the whole difference from a resort wedding, and it cuts both ways. You are not renting an island for an afternoon. You are a guest somewhere people live, farm and go to school, which is why a ceremony here costs a fraction of the resort price and why a little courtesy goes further than it would behind a resort gate.
What is on the island

Getting there from Malé
A shared speedboat takes about one hour fifteen to one hour thirty, depending on the weather. There is no domestic flight and no seaplane to Thoddoo, and none is needed.

What it costs, and who to book with
Booked directly through a guesthouse, a seat is USD 35 to 45 per person each way. Resellers charge considerably more for the same seat on the same boat, so book direct. Cash is preferred and US dollars are accepted.
These times come from the published schedules of two independent guesthouses and have been stable, but a speedboat schedule is not an airline timetable. We confirm your boat in writing before you travel, and we do not book a ceremony on a day you cannot reach.
The public ferry, and a caution
MTCC route 303 is far cheaper — roughly USD 4 to 6 — and far slower, at about seven hours twenty minutes. The times we have found are Malé at 09:00 on Mondays and Thursdays, arriving 16:20, returning from Thoddoo at 06:30 on Sundays and Wednesdays.
We could not verify that timetable on MTCC’s own site. Treat it as indicative and reconfirm before you plan anything around it. Two sailings a week also means a missed boat can cost you three days, which is what the speedboat fare is really buying.
Rooms and transfers, arranged with you
You do not have to assemble the trip yourself. Tell us your dates and how many of you are travelling, and we will find a guesthouse on Thoddoo, reserve your speedboat seats and put it on one invoice alongside the ceremony. Rooms on the island start at around $50 a night and the speedboat takes about ninety minutes each way. These figures are an indication only: we confirm availability and exact costs for your dates in writing before you pay anything.

Green tax of USD 6 per person per night applies to the stay on an inhabited island, against USD 12 at a resort. It is collected by the guesthouse.
The two beaches
Thoddoo has two designated bikini beaches. They are where swimwear is worn, and between them they cover most of what anyone comes to the Maldives for.
Sunrise Beach
On the northeast side, closer to the village and usually the quieter of the two. Best early, when the light is low and the water is flat.
Sunset Beach
On the west side. Larger, with toilets, showers and changing rooms, and facing the sunset. This is where ceremonies are held: the twenty minutes before the sun drops are the reason the whole thing is worth doing here rather than at home.
Changing facilities matter more than they sound. It is the difference between getting ready properly and getting ready in a guesthouse a walk away.
This is the part a booking page usually leaves out, which is exactly why it is worth reading. None of it is difficult, and knowing it in advance is the difference between feeling like a guest and feeling like a tourist.
An island with a community
Thoddoo is a working island of about 1,900 people rather than a resort, and part of enjoying it is feeling comfortable with how life works here. Away from the two designated bikini beaches, shoulders and knees are covered, and swimwear stays on those beaches. Alcohol is not available anywhere on the island. Public affection is not customary in the village, though your ceremony on the beach is entirely your own. We will talk you through all of this again before you arrive.
- During Ramadan, be discreet about eating and drinking in public during daylight. Guesthouses serve visitors as normal.
- Ask before photographing people, and particularly before photographing children.
- Day trips to nearby resorts are straightforward if a drink by a pool is part of the week you had in mind.
To say the obvious thing plainly: none of this touches your ceremony. On the beach, in front of your photographer, the day belongs entirely to the two of you.
Weather, and the months to choose
Figures from the Maldives Meteorological Service. Temperatures average 25 to 32°C all year. The central atolls average about 1,966 mm of rain annually, and it normally arrives as short showers with sunny periods between them rather than as a day of grey.
- January to March
- The northeast monsoon, and the dry season. The most reliable window for a beach ceremony.
- December and April
- Transitional months either side of the dry season. Usually very good.
- Mid-May to November
- The southwest monsoon, and the wet season. Rain is showery rather than constant, and ceremonies still happen.
A plan for changing weather
Rain here is usually showery and short. We watch the forecast with you and look first for a suitable dry period the same day, agreeing a plan together by late morning. If the day cannot go ahead at all, we work with you to move the ceremony to another day during your stay at no additional ceremony charge. Nobody loses a deposit to the weather.
The Green Tax nobody mentions
The Maldives charges a Green Tax per person per night. At a guesthouse of 50 rooms or fewer on an inhabited island it is USD 6. At a resort it is USD 12. For two people over seven nights that is USD 84 less, before anyone has compared the room rate.
It is a small thing on its own. It is also the shape of the whole comparison: the same ocean, the same sand, most of the same afternoon, at a different price. Every price we publish already includes 17% tourism GST, so the figure you see is the figure you pay.
